Photos from the protest. Orchestra members and the Save the CBC Radio Orchestra banner. It was fantastic to see these amazing musicians at the rally. As musicians, they want the legacy to be passed down to the generation of musicians coming up just as it had been passed to them. As one member put it, “We are only borrowing our seat in the orchestra for a time…The end of the orchestra would mean the end of to that continuity which has been nourished and cherished for over 70 years.”

Save the CBC Radio Orchestra and the CBC Radio Two!
This letter was written on the West-coast of Canada with the plea to SAVE the only remaining CBC radio Orchestra! Please! We Canadians are some of the most fortuned people in the world. Many of us are immigrants or offspring’s of such, have brought with us skills to help build this great country of ours, which we now call HOME. We have brought some belongings and treasures and the love and appreciation of classic music. Regardless of where one came from, the knowledge and appreciation of classic music (the old and proven) was and is prevalent in Europe and countries across the ocean and a part of the every day life, especially in this high-tech era. Our ancestors less privileged, made the effort and took the time to teach the younger folks the appreciation of classic music so it could be past on from one generation to the next!
Now here we are, it is 2008 and it is our turn to place the great gift of classic music into the hands (ears) of our next generation with as much dignity, respect and appreciation as it was inherited by us! Are we able to do it, or have we ourselves lost and dwindled away that great Heritage of classic music? What will our answers be, when our young people do question us about the preservation of classic music for them, and how many of us are thankful to our older generation that it was preserved for us even if we were not much impressed by it at the time? In this high-tech and crime loaded era we are finding ourselves in it is more important than ever before, to preserve our great Heritage of classic music in order to bring the scale into balance.
Our CBC radio Orchestra has to be saved, as it is a States Orchestra and we should be proud of it, especially as it had struggled under less than good conditions to survive for so long. It must not end up in the dustbin!
Canada has produced numerous quality artists in the classic musical field. They are known and appreciated throughout the world. Many of those fine artists were inspired by classic music heard at their parents or grandparents homes via CBC radio2, the station subsidized by Canadian Taxpayers. What a credit to our Nation!
Humbly, I do beg all of you to join in saving the CBC radio Orchestra from distraction and since our CBC radio2 has eliminated many classic music programs, let us opt for a 24hr repertoire of classic music throughout the week and weekends, presented with more decorum and dignity. It was once the practice of CBC radio FM, having allowed for it to slip away, I would consider as an insult to the intelligence of Canadians!
Also programs of spiritual and reflective content, extending beyond choral concert would be beneficial. Aired at a time span where it would be most conducive to our aging population, to the lonely and hurting ones who would find comfort in such a program. Since the sound of classic music has a calming effect on the central nervous system (even if one is not aware of it) every listener would benefit! Here on the West coast we do need CBC radio2 desperately to provide classic music because it is the only station with a classic repertoire, unlike the Eastern part of Canada. Living there for a few years I had several stations to choose from, one did not have to depend on CBC radio2.
Please fellow Canadians let us do what ever we can, to save the CBC radio Orchestra and opt for a classic music repertoire on CBC radio2 by signing the petition posted on screen and writing to CBC, the Prime Minister and Parliament and we will have done good for our country. Thank you! .
I most emphatically join the protest to save the Orchestra and CBCRadio2 for Classical music.
How are we going to teach the next generation to love classical music if we don’t make it available for them?
There is a large audience for opera and classical music.
Just see how the Met Live Operabroadcasts are received. It is always sold out, and usually TWO auditoriums are filled.
I am very much in favour of Canadian Orchestras, but I also would like to hear some internationan orchestras as well such as the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Philharmonic, Vienna Philhafmonic etc
Also the argument that listen to CDs or “the Internet does not wash. The radio is a lot more accessible than either of these technologies.
I have a radio in every room of my house, but no computer or CD player !
Please keep CBCRadio2 !
